Imagine that there is a mechanism that allows protons to re-enter the mitochondrial matrix without the coupled phosphorylation of ADP. What would happen to the energy associated with the proton re-entering?

If protons can re enter mitochondrial matrix without phosphorylation of ADP to ATP, then there will be a disasterous effect on cell metabolism. When protons moves through F0F1 ATPase , it moves the F0F1 ATPase like a water wheel and due to this movement, phosphorylation of ADP to ATP occurs. But if protons moves into the matrix by any other way, concentration gradient will gradually lost and ultimately proton movement will cease. This will affect ATP production by F0F1ATPase and due to lack of ATP in the cell, the cell will eventually die.
