Can someone explain to me how glycolysis is related to gluconeogenesis, and glycogenolysus?
I’m having a difficult time putting together everything.
Also, under what circumstances would our body choose one process over the other??

Basically, if someone could explajn the big picture!

Thank you :)

Answer #1

All the three steps mentioned above are somehow related to the metabolism of glucose but each one is different from one another .Glycolysis is a breakdown of glucose molecule when cellular respiration occur. In glycolysis glucose molecules are broken down so as to form pyruvate molecules and then pyruvate molecules undergo further reaction to finally produce energy .Gluconeogenesis is the formation of glucose from new molecules that is molecules like proteins lipids while glycogenolysis is a breakdown of glycogen which is stored in the liver and the muscles so as to form glucose .Glucose are the subunits of glycogen .Glycolysis occurs in the body when energy is required so glucose is breakdown so as to release energy .Gluconeogenesis occurs when the body is Starving that is the body does not get carbohydrates and glycogen is also not present in the body so it starts forming glucose from molecules like amino acids and lipids .Glycogenolysis is the breakdown of glycogen molecules .Whenever there is deficiency of glucose and glycogen is present in the body then this glycogen is broken down into glucose so if a person is Starving then first glycolysis will occur then glycogenolysis will occur and if both glycogen and glucose are absent in the body then gluconeogenesis will occur.
