In-groups: this is the group to which the person belongs to. It may be his family , his siblings, or may be his very close friends, who know the person completely, and he can relate to it. This group is something that gives identity to the person. For example if you are a guitarist then you would consider yourself to be a part of all your friends who are guitarist or who perform with you and relate to your passion.

Out-groups: There are many groups to which you may not connect at all. It may be because you do not like that group, it is not in your passion or may be even when you are neutral about it , it can be an outgroup for you. For example you ar a guitarist , and then there is a club of quality circle. This club or group consists of students who work in research and development and contribute to quality enhancement. Now since you are in no way connected to this group , this becomes the out-group for you.

Reference group: it is a group of persons , who serve as a reference for you to set your standards , thoughts and belief in general. Now suppose you are a guitarist , then you would surely aspire all the world famous guitarist and try to work on their lines. This is because that is your choice and your passion that drives you towars this group. Such a group is called reference group. It serve as a benchmark for you.

Yes we are always a part of in-group. This is the groups one belongs to totally. This group gives the person his or her identity and a feeling of belongingness. It is important to have a sound in-group to have a great bondling and likeness in various aspects. It provides you more confidence and helps you shape your personality. Ultimately you are known by your in-group.
