Answer b:

Possible independent variable:

1. Number of products that requires plastic straw as a complimentary product.

2. Consumption of products that requires the use of plastic straw.

3. Degradable substitutes available to plastic straw.

The above three independent variable will help in predicting the dependent variable i.e. willingness to reduce the use of plastic straws.

Number of products that requires plastic straw as a complimentary product will affect the dependent variable i.e. willingness to reduce the use of plastic straws in a way that it will help us to determine how many products are sold in the market which compulsorily require the plastic straw as a complimentary product. This independent variable will help in determining whether these products can be consumed without the use of plastic straw. It can be measured through the qualitative analysis of the secondary data available with the agencies keeping record of all the products being sold within the region and through non comparative scale or in absolute number or in the range of numbers from the various manufacturers of similar products while collecting the primary data from the manufacturers of the product.

Consumption of products that requires the use of plastic straw will affect the dependent variable i.e. willingness to reduce the use of plastic straws in a way that it will help us to determine what is the consumption pattern and frequency of the products that requires the use of plastic straw. If the consumption pattern and frequency is determined, we can take the appropriate measures such as training for the sellers of the product to further train the customers in reducing the use of plastic straw for consuming such product. Consumption pattern can be measured through the continuous scale to obtain the exact numbers whereas the consumption frequency can be measured through the ordinal scale such as regularly, occasionally, weekly, etc.

Degradable substitutes available to plastic straw will affect the dependent variable i.e. willingness to reduce the use of plastic straws in a way that it will help us to determine if there exists any alternative to reduce the hazard of using the plastic straw. If such alternative exist then it can be implemented. And if such alternative is already available in the market, then the individuals using the plastic straw can be forced to use the degradable substitute. This independent variable can be measured using the comparative scale while conducting the survey of the customers and the suppliers.
