Isoleucine is one of the three branched chain amino acids alongside both leucine and valine. Isoleucine is intermediate for its ability to induce muscle protein synthesis but it is able to more significantly increase glucose uptake and the usage of glucose during exercise.

There are 2 mechanisms by which isoleucine can be activate-

1. The action of isoleucine on glucose uptake are dependent on P13K and PKC activation.

2. One study investigating the mechanisms underlying the glucose uptake effect of isoleucine in muscle cells , noted that there was a suppression of the mRNA for two enzymes that are involved in gluconeogenesis. It has been noted that suppression of gluconeogenesis , may render the effects of isoleucine .
