Question

The lengthy boom of an overhead construction crane, a portion of which is shown is an
example of a periodic structure- one which is composed of repeated and identical
structural units. Use the method of sections to find the forces in members FJ and GJ

Answer #1

For force in GJ consider a cut section parellel to GF cutting GJ ,JF and IF .

Now let forces in GJ JF and IF be Fgj ,Fjf , Fif

The forces Fjf , Fif anr concurrent at f hence will not produce any moment about F

only Fgj will produce moment

so Mf= 0

Fgj (GF) = 5000g(2/2)

Fgj (2) = 5000g(2/2)

Fgj = 5000g/2 =24.5 KN Tensile

Similarly taking section from I cutting FJ and GJ

Only forces are Fgj and Fjf distance of perpendicular from G on JF is 1.414 that is root 2

so MG = 0

Fjf (1.414) = 5000g*1

Fjf =34.64 KN Tensile

    You have been tasked with designing a beam to support a lifting crane. The applied load is offset from the center of the carriage used to mount the crane to the overhead beam. Therefore the loads applied to the two axels, P1 and P2, differ. You should use your student number to determine the magnitude of the applied loads. The position of the crane can vary (dependent on the variable, x, shown below) Example of a lifting crane Structural idealisation...
