Name Class Section Answer these questions before coming to the lab and turn in your answers at the beginning of the lab to get credit. Turning this pre lab question sheet later would result in not getting any credit for the pre lab. Period T is defined as the time required for an object with mass M attached to a string length L to complete one cycle of motion. For small oscillations of a pendulum we have: where L= length of the string (in m), g= 9.80 m/s, and T-period of time to complete one cycle of its motion (in s). 1. Show a free body of the pendulum while in equilibrium. 2. If the mass of the pendulum is 250g, what is the tension in the string? Show all equations and calculation to get credit. 3. If you double the atached mass, how does the period T change? Explain your answer 4. If you cut the string in half, would the period be longer or shorter? Explain your answer.

A simple pendulum consists of a ball of mass M hanging from a uniform string of mass m and length L, with m << M. (a) If the period of oscillations for the pendulum is T, derive an expression for the speed of a transverse wave in the string when the pendulum hangs at rest in terms of m, M, T and g (the acceleration due to gravity). Your expression should not include L. (b) If the string is made...
