Immediacy is the way we show willingness to communicate. Non- verbal immediacy includes behaviors such as smile,eye contact,hand gesture ,body posture.

Example:- Gestures while talking to someone, looks,smile we give. These are more effective than verbal behaviors.

Cognitive valence theory is an explanation for responses to changes in non verbal involvement and immediacy. It predicts how and why behavioral intimacy of a relationship partner increase. Behavior must be perceived to get physiological arousal. Arousal can be low, moderate,high.

When high arousal occur responses are negative,when low arousal occur responses are positive,but in moderate arousal 6 schema get activated. These are

Cultural appropriateness:- If behavior is appropriate in our culture.

Personal predisposition:- People differ in personality.touching while talking can be appreciated by one person but not by another.

Interpersonal valence:- it means degree to which we find someone attractive.

Relational appropriateness:- how we classify our relationship with others.

Situational appropriateness:- The place where intimacy behavior occur is important.

Psychological state:- our mood make us feel and react differently.

Intimacy relationship may get affected by use of non verbal immediacy. Positive and negative valence behavior is a result of non-verbal transmission of feeling or emotion.
