In rats, several independently assorting autosomal genes affect coat color. Gene A controls the distribution of yellow pigment in hair, and gene B causes black pigmentation. The two genes interact as follows: A–B– (gray), A–bb (yellow), aaB– (black), and aabb (cream). These genotypes are only expressed in the presence of the dominant allele of a third gene, C; rats with genotype cc are albino.

a.    Deduce the genotype of each albino mice, to the extent that is possible, in the following table. Explain your answers.

1. Gray x albino-1

AABBCC x AABBcc ------>AABBCc (F1) due to presence of Cc genotype all will be gray.

When this gray F1 is self crossed, other genes being dominant the cross between alleles of c gene will be Cc x Cc ----> 1CC:2Cc:1cc genotype and 3:1 phenotype, where 3 is gray and 1 is albino. So, genotype of albino mice here will be AABBcc.

2. Gray x albino-2

AABBCC x AaBbcc----->16 AABBCc: 16 AABbCc: 16 AaBBCc: 16 AaBbCc

All genotypes have A_B_C_ combination so all are gray in F1.

Now, If we take the genetic combination AABbCc that is one of the gray allele in the F1 population, and self cross it, we will find following results:

AABbCc x AABbCc-----> 1 AABBCC: 2 AABBCc: 1 AABBcc: 2 AABbCC: 4 AABbCc : 2 AABbcc: 1 AAbbCC : 2 AAbbCc: 1 AAbbcc (genotype) which is equal to the phenotype 9:3:4

Phenotype- 9 gray: 3 yellow: 4 albino according to the genetic combinations of Colors given in the question.
