In rats, at least 2 different genes interact to determine hair color. The allele A causes a yellow-colored coat and the allele R produces a black coat. If both dominant alleles are present (genotype A-R) the rats are gray, and if none are present (aarr) the rats are cream-colored.

a. If two heterozygous gray rats are mated and have 16 babies, show the expected number of babies of each color.

b. If a heterozygous gray rat is mated with cream-colored rat, show the expected proportion of colors of the offspring.

Answer #1

a.AaRr x AaRr

AR Ar aR ar
AR AARR AARr AaRR AaRr
Ar AARr AArr AaRr Aarr
aR AaRR AaRr aaRR aaRr
ar AaRr Aarr aaRr aarr

grey - AARR(1) , AARr (2) , AaRR (2), AaRr (4) , total -9

Yellow - Aarr (3)

Black - aaRR(1), aaRr(2), total -3

cream - aarr(1)

Thus the ratio obtained is 9:3:3:1 of Grey : yellow : Black : cream

b. AaRr x aarr

Gametes- AR, Ar, aR, ar from "AaRr " and all "ar" from aarr.

AR Ar aR ar
ar AaRr Aarr aaRr aarr

AaRr - Grey 1/4 or 25%

Aarr - Yellow 1/4 or 25%

aaRr - Black 1/4 or 25%

aarr - Cream 1/4 or 25%

Thus the ratio obtained is- grey:yellow: black : cream = 1:1:1:1

In rats, several independently assorting autosomal genes affect coat color. Gene A controls the distribution of yellow pigment in hair, and gene B causes black pigmentation. The two genes interact as follows: A–B– (gray), A–bb (yellow), aaB– (black), and aabb (cream). These genotypes are only expressed in the presence of the dominant allele of a third gene, C; rats with genotype cc are albino. a.    Deduce the genotype of each albino mice, to the extent that is possible, in the...

    1) Coat color in mice is determined by several independently assorting autosomal genes. Gene A is involved in the distribution of pigment along the hair. A dominant allele (A) produces a hair color called "agouti"--the hair has dark pigment at the base and tip of each hair shaft and yellow pigment in the central portion of the shaft. Homozygous recessive mice (aa) are missing the yellow stripe and thus have solid dark-colored hair. Gene B is involved in the color...

Question 25 2 pts In dragons, the dominant allele R causes solid tail color, and the recessive alleler results in white spots on a colored background. Two independently assorting genes help determine fruit color in squash. At the first locus, the W allele codes for a dominant white phenotype, whereas the w allele allows colored squash. At the second locus, the allele Y codes for a dominant yellow phenotype, and the allele y codes for a recessive green phenotype. The interaction between these two genes is an example of dominant epistasis, with the W locus acting as the epistatic locus and the Y locus acting as...

Uption 4. The inheritance of hair and eye color is very complicated. Scientists have found approximately 10-20 genes responsible for determining hair and eye color in humans (sheesh - I thought a dihybrid cross with 2 genes was bad...). Although many genes are involved in producing these phenotypes, it does seem that just a few genes play a major role in determining the color of our hair and eyes. The following is a simplified, but still somewhat realistic view of...

Fur color in dogs can be black, brown or white. The B gene is responsible for fur color. Dogs that inherit a dominant B will have black fur. Dogs that inherit 2 recessive alleles, bb, will have brown color. There is a second gene that contributes to fur color in dogs: gene I. Individuals who inherit a dominant allele, I, at this location, will always have white color. Individuals who inherit the homozygous recessive condition, ii, will be able to...
