1) Describe a research question that interests you. It could be related to your career interests, your major, or just a topic that you find interesting. 2) Identify the predictor variable (independent variable) and the outcome variable (dependent variable) for your study. 3) State your null hypothesis. 4) State your alternative hypothesis and why your alternative hypothesis is either a directional or non-directional hypothesis. 5) If your statistical results allow you to reject the null hypothesis, what would that mean in your study? Here's an example from an actual research study that I have worked on. 1) Research question: Is there a relationship between the Big Five personality trait Conscientiousness and a person's score on an eco-friendly behavior survey? 2) The predictor variable is the participants' score on the Big Five personality trait: conscientiousness. The outcome variable is the participants' score on the eco-friendly behavior survey. 3) The null hypothesis is: There is no relationship between participants' conscientiousness score and their eco-friendly behavior score. 4) The alternative hypothesis is: There is a relationship between participants' conscientiousness score and their eco-friendly behavior score. This is a non-directional hypothesis because I did not specify a direction for the effects. If it were directional, I would have specified the direction of the effect- for example, the higher the conscientiousness score, the higher the eco-friendly behavior score. 5) If I reject the null hypothesis (that there is no relationship), then I am concluding that there is a relationship between conscientiousness and eco-friendly behavior.

An industrial and organizational psychologist hypothesizes that applied mathematicians, such as actuaries, are less extroverted than the general population. To test his hypothesis, he recruits applied mathematicians into a study (assume it is a simple random sample) and obtains 21 completed questionnaires measuring the Big Five dimensions of personality (neuroticism, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness). Personality dimensions measured by the instrument are normally distributed in the general population, and are reported as ?t‑scores, with a mean of 50...

Are my answers correct? 5. Gravetter/Wallnau/Forzano, Essentials - Chapter 15 - End-of-chapter question 18 A recent study indicates that people tend to select video game avatars with characteristics similar to those of their creators (Bélisle & Onur, 2010). Participants who had created avatars for a virtual community game completed a questionnaire about their personalities. An independent group of viewers examined the avatars and recorded their impressions of the avatars. One personality characteristic considered was introverted/extroverted. The following frequency distribution of...

Research Summary: Use this description of a study to answer the following sets of questions. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Individual Differences found that adults with ADHD displayed more creative achievement than those who didn't have the disorder. "For the same reason that ADHD might create problems, like distraction, it can also allow an openness to new ideas," says Holly White, assistant professor of cognitive psychology. "Not being completely focused on a task lets the mind...

Dr. Rulet is an expert in addictive behaviors. One day it occurred to her that perhaps mathematic efficiency is related to gambling addiction. Therefore, she instructed her lab to test a handful of known gambling-addicted individuals on both the SAT mathematics section and the Gambling-related Addiction Behavior (GAB) scale. When Dr. Rulet thought about this possible relationship between mathematic efficiency and gambling addiction, she reasoned that those who are good at mathematics might be more inclined to use their ability...
