As a individual adapt to the environment and organise the their behaviour, certain psychological structure of change occurs, and these are called schemes, and these schemes changes as the child matures. Some of these schemes are innate and others are acquired by experience.

When the child does not change much, they assimilate more than they accommodate to the environment, and this steady period is referred as cognitive equilibrium. During a period of rapid cognitive change the children are in a state of diseqilibrium in this they accommodate more than they assimilate. This back and forth movement of equilibrium and didequilibrium is referred as equilibration by Piaget. And this equilibration ultimately leads to efficient schemes.
