For a quantitative trait observed in the F2 generation, the number of

individuals showing one of the extreme phenotypes was 11 out of a

total of 704 F2 progeny. Therefore the number of genes pairs involved

in controlling the trait being studied, under the given set of

experimental conditions is:

Answer #1

(1/4)^n = ratio of extreme phenotypes
       = 11/704
(0.25)^n = 0.0156

solving for n: convert to log
nlog(0.25) = log 0.0156
n(-0.6) = (-1.8)
n = 3
so, 3 gene pairs.

    Assume that tail length in white rats is a quantitative trait. In one pure-breeding line the tail averages 7 inches and in another it averages 4 inches. Progeny arising from the interbreeding of these two lines have tails which average 5.5 inches. When members of the F1 interbreed, the 496 offspring have tails which also average 5.5 inches in length, but vary much more than those of their parents, with the range between 4 and 7 inches. Two members of...

    On the island of Notion, in the Factotum Archipelago, there lives a population of pencil bears. A portion of these bears have silky fur, and as a result, are much better surfers. The texture of the fur is determined by a single autosomal locus with two alleles: S (trait allele) and s (wild type allele). In a recent study, researched collected the values in the following table: Table 1. Counts of Pencil Bear fur style by genotype Phenotype Genotype Silky...
