There are some exceptions to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VII does permit employers to hire and employ employees, on the basis of his religion, sex, or national origin when religion, sex, or national origin is a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ) that is reasonably necessary for the business to operate normally (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, n.d.). It also permits any educational institution to hire and employ employees of a particular religion if the educational institution is owned, supported, controlled, or managed by a particular religion or by a particular religious corporation, association, or society institute in whole or for the most part or if the curriculum of the educational institution is directed toward the promotion of a particular religion (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, n.d.). Title VII also allows employers to refuse to hire or to terminate any member of the Communist Party and any individual who does not qualify to work in a position that national security interest at hand if the position requires the individual to be qualified to work in areas of national security.
