Answer #1

Lewis dot structure is used to show bonding in a molecule. It also tells about the number of lone pairs around the central atom. The polarity of a species is dependent on two factors: 1) electronegativity difference of the individual bonds in the species 2) geometry of the species The shape of a molecule or polyatomic ion can be predicted using Valence Shell Electron-Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) approach. This approach predicts shapes based on the repulsion between electrons of the central atom. The atoms of a molecule or polyatomic ion place themselves as far as possible far from each other, to minimize the electron-electron repulsion. The number of positions surrounding the central atom is termed as steric number. This number represents both atoms and lone pairs (if present). For calculation of steric number, first draw its Lewis dot structure. Then, find the number of atoms and lone pairs surrounded by the central atom. The steric number is the sum of bonding atoms and lone pairs (if present).
