Answer #1

NaBH4 is a hydridde based reducing agent which can be used in protic solvent.

There are severy factor which cause the excess of NaBH4 used.

One is NaBH4 is moisture sensitive, not all NaBH4 is active in reduction process hence the reaction is done at inert condition sometime and at lower temperature and other is all the molecules of benzophenone must be reduced to alcohal. If any of the benzophenone molecule left in the solution can be oxidised by air which cause the problem during purification .

Also not all the B-H bonds are reactive towards ketone or aldehyde. In many case B-H bond also reacts with Solvent also. Hence excess NaBH4 is used in the reaction progress.

Thanks
