Answer #1

Completed table is in the uploaded picture:

Ques 1: NaCl is soluble in water, but I2 is not. Explain.

Ans: NaCl is soluble because it is made up of charged ions. It can interact with dipoles in water molecules.

But I2 is held together by covalent bond. Neither the atoms of I2 molecule is charged or attracted to water. The itermolecular attraction between I2 molecules are due to dispersion of electron cloud and not due to charge.

Ques: State the general solubility rule concerning the polarities of solute and solvent.

Ans: General solubility rule concerning the polarities of solute and solvent states that " like dissolves like" i.e. polar solute is soluble in polar solvents while non-polar solutes are dissolved in non- polar solvents. e.g. in the table above sucrose being polar is soluble in polar solvent (water) and I2 (a non-polar molecule) is soluble in a non polar solvent (cyclohexane)
