Lab 5: Primate Features
Examine the pictures of the skulls provided and enter their characteristics in the table below.
Orbit (Postorbital Bar, Closure, or Neither) |
Eye Orientation (More Forwards or More Sideways) |
Relative Brain Size (Large or Small) |
Primate? (Yes or No) |

Skull A |

Skull B |

Skull C |
Orbit | Eye Orientation | Relative Brain size | |
Skull A | post orbital closure | More forwards | Large |
Skull B | post orbital closure | More forwards | Large |
Skull C | Post orbital closure | More forwards | Large |
-Post Orbital closure denotes to a plate of neural sheath that connects to eye with the primary head structure instead of a bar. This feature is found in higher primates. Here also there is presence of post orbital closure in each case.
-The vision of these skulls are more forwards as side vision ensures the eyes at lateral side like rabbits and dear. This is a very advanced characteristics found in primates.
- There are large brain size related to rest of the skull and other animals. Primates have large skull size accommodating larger brain. So all of these skulls are of primates.
Give a thumbs up if you like the answer. Thank you

attached you have 2 picture of the scull
and the third picture are the question regarding the
sculls
Looking at the skull, primates are distinguishable from other mammals using a combination of features-no single feature is unique to primates, but the combination is Primates have a closed orbital rim (either a postorbital bar with a ring of bone all around the margin of the eye socket or postorbital closure with a completely enclosed eye socket). Examine the 3 skulls below....
Part 3. Determining character states: an introduction to primate systematics Instructions: Compare the six labeled skulls and fill in the chart by assigning character states to the characters using 0, 1, or 2. Then, use the information from the completes chart to answer the following questions. Score the characters in the following manner: Post-orbital bar: 0 = absent 1 = present Post-orbital closure: 0= absent 1 - present Tooth comb: 0= absent 1 = present Dental formula: 0 = 2.1.3.3....

5 In examining a number of mammal skeletons-for example, bear, lion, opossum, wolf, raccoon, pig, and elephant, in addition to several primate species-what characteristics would you use to decide whether a skeleton is a primate? Name Anthroposcopy 7. Section Date Part 1 Materials Needed OAs many skuls as available to set out Take a look at each of the skulls in your lab. Compare them for the presence of any of the traits indicated below. All of these traits fall within the normal range of human variation, but some of them are present at a somewhat quency in certain populations than in others. Although some may be caused by disease agents or trauma, most are...
