The two main confounders for radon concentration and lung cancer are:

1. Radon decays quite quickly giving away radioactive particles which are inhaled if some on is in exposure of radon. The long term exposures causes lung cancer as it causes damage to the cell lining in the lungs.

2. Radon is a inert gas which is naturally released from Radium. The  rocks,soil and groundwater are its sources of spread. It basically causes damage to the DNA of the epithelium of the cells of the respiratory system hence causing lung cancers.
