Answer 1.4 : “a” is reaching a maximum that corresponds to carrying capacity.

Explanation: exponential growth occurs when resources are unlimited and thus gives a J-shaped curve.

Exponential growth is not sustainable, since it depends on infinite amounts of resources. It may take place for a while, for example if there are fewer individuals and more resources. But when the number of individuals of a particular species gets large enough, resources start to get consumed and thus leading to slow growth rate. Eventually, the growth rate will stop and reach a plateau, this leads to formation of an S-shaped curve which is called logistic curve. The population size at which it levels off, represent the maximum population size of a species supported by that particular environment, and this is called as carrying capacity. One of main characterises of S –shaped curve is that it provides us carrying capacity of an environment for a particular species.

Thus a logistic (S shaped curve) growth of a species is reaching a maximum that corresponds to carrying capacity.
