3rd Line of Defense |
1st line of defence:
Innate system. Function- To keep pathogens out of the body physically and or kill them by chemical means. Non specific action.
Structures: Skin, mucous membrane (prevents physical entry of pathogens); sebum (kills pathogens); lysozyme (protects the eyes and kills bacteria in food); gastric juice (kills bacteria as it is highly acidic in nature)
2nd line of defence:
Innate system. Non specific action. Function - Engulf and kill bacteria non specifically (by certain cells) or kill bacteria by physical or chemical action.
Structures: Phagocytic cells (different macrophages, neutrophils) that engulf foreign pathogen and kills them; inflammation is an elaborate cellular response involving many cytokines that target pathogens; fever by which body raises temperature in order to kill bacteria.
3rd line of defence:
Adaptive system. Very specific. Function - to produce specific antibodies against specific pathogens in order to kill them and also store these antibodies as memories for future use.
Structures: T lymphocytes (produces antibodies against virus infected cells and cancerous cells in the body); B lymphocytes (produces soluble antibodies against foreign microbes and pathogens). They also produce memory cells for fighting a future infection.

help!! Immune system is our body defense system against foreign pathogens. Describe how innate and adaptive immunity respond and defend against a novel virus, such as SARS-CoV-2
1.Which cells are the link between the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system? 1. A. Memory cells B. Cytotoxic T-cells C. Antigen-Presenting cells D. Endothelial cells 2.Epidemiological clues to the cause of an infectious disease include statistics on: A. age, geographic location, genetics, and sex of victims B. rate and pattern of spread through a population C. time of year D. all of the above
Outline the Innate (Non-specific) Immune system, both the 1st and 2nd line of defenses.
Short Answer Question 9: The Immune System ----------------------------------- Key Concepts/Questions: a) Compare and Contrast Innate vs. Adaptive Immunity with respect to features including speed, specificity, memory, and cell types involved. b) Describe the types of professional antigen presenting cells and how they function with respect to the cell that they interact with, and how this interaction works at the molecular level
Immunology (elaborate explanations are not necessary 3-4 sentences are suffice) State timing, steps and cells involved in the innate immune response to bacterial antigens and contrast this with adaptive immune responses to the same antigen. Explain how macrophages recognize bacteria and the host mechanisms that lead to recruitment of cells to sites of infection. Explain how inflammation is triggered, the changes in cells at sites of infection that occur and how this relates targeting of both phagocytes and adaptive immune...
Innate immune system components, for each one of the components, indicate: what privates the component and what functions does this component play in the mine defense of the body?
Explain how the interplay between the skin and all other 1st and 2nd line non-specific immune defense mechanisms protect you from microbial invasion.
Create a concept map that describes how the immune system fights against a respiratory viral infection. Implement the following words in your concept map, but you will need more words to make full map. Try to look for connections between the innate and adaptive immune systems. Antibody B cell Plasma cell NK cell Interferon Cilia MHCI molecule Dendritic cell iAVP Tc Antigen RLR TH2 CD8 IgG we are studying immunology. my teacher wants us to create a map using the...
Adaptive Immunity Worksheet in the body. a. What 1. Adaptive immune cells will interact mainly at the about this organ makes it a good place for the cells to interact? 2. The adaptive immune system is divided into two responses: The response, which uses B cells, and the response, which uses T cells. 3. What is one difference between antigen that B cells respond to vs. antigen that T cells respond to? 4. Fill in the following information about 3...
1. The specific immune response art 1 of 3 is the second line of defense after anatomical and chemical barriers involves memory of antigens from previous exposure. is the first line of defense in the immune system. involves millions of B and T cells - each individual cell can recognize many different antigens. eBook 2. T cells arise and finish development in the bone marrow. all carry out the same function. are responsible for cell-mediated immunity. make antibodies. 3. Antigens...
