Biotechnology or genetic engineering can elicit negative responses. Is biotechnology a new or old branch of science? Should there be limitations on how this technology is used? why or why not?
Biotechnology is a branch of science which deals with application of principles of biological science along with engineering used to create new products from the natural biological origin. The term biotechnology was coined by Karl Erkey, a Hungarian Engineer.
This implies use of living organisms to create certain vaccines which helps in quality of human health as well as increasing the food supply in the field of agriculture owing to growing population across the globe. That's a whole lot of benefits. But there are drawbacks and negative effects of biotechnology. Lets go through these negative effects-
Is biotechnology old or new branch of science :
We can say that biotechnology is used since ages and is as old as the human civilisation is. Wine and beer were prepared by human beings since many centuries ago and studies say that these were prepared as early as 6000 B.C. Curd too was cultured in 4000 B.C. Now, we know it is due to the action of micro organisms.
The new age modern technology allows the genetic manipulations and there has been improvements which are made in the old biotechnological process. Therefore, biotechnology is old branch of science with modern technological improvements.
Should there be limitations on how genetic engineering be used :
Yes, there has to be limitations on how this modern technology is been used. Even though there are alot of benefits from the techniques of genetic engineering there has to be limitations imposed.
Well , this was the simple explanation to biotechnology- old or new branch of science and its limitations.
Thank you..

Bacteria are used extensively in Biotechnology/Genetic Engineering. Describe two different techniques or tools used in biotechnology/genetic engineering that involve bacteria (i.e. whole cells, genetic information, protein products, etc.) Be sure to explain how bacteria are involved in the technique you described.

This new company wants to target a new market: genetic engineering for home and office decoration. Here's their plan: they want you to create a bacterial culture that will not only fluoresce in dim light, but also fluoresce in an oscillatory manner. Given your experience with operons, you decide that you'd probably start there... Here's one hint: to make cells fluoresce, you can make them express a protein called Green Fluorescent Protein (or GFP). This protein is not naturally produced...

Eclipse Engineering provides services of structural engineering. They just opened a new branch in Portland, OR. One of their products is called Structural Insulated Panels, or SIPs. It is a type of foam insulation that replaces typical wall and roof framing for residential or commercial buildings. Clients are billed a fixed fee for each project based on square footage of the building, square footage of the panel area, and number of panels. Depending on how long a project takes to...

ABC, Inc. is about to launch a new product. The firm can use either a proven technology or a new (experimental) method. The proven technology will produce a certain cash flow of $24M. In contrast, the cash flow from the new technology are uncertain. If the new technology works, it will produce a cash flow of $28M next year. If it is unsuccessful, it will produce a zero cash flow next year. The probability of success is 0.8 and is...
