Answer #1
  • Recombinant DNA technology (RDT) aims to create genetically modified organisms or GMO are genetically engineered organism with a gene expressing a new trait.

This may arise medical and ethical issues as:

  • A new pathogen may evolve which is unknown and may impose threat to cause unknown disease, including viral infection.
  • Horizontal gene transfer may result in creation of resistant strains or super bugs.
  • RDT may be used in agriculture to increase productivity, to produce insect-resistant, disease resistant.
  • There are controversies regarding GM (genetically modified) crops, hybrid seeds. Like allergies caused by certain GM maize. The modified GMO may cause tissue rejection also.
  • GMO tested in animals may cause diseases or unknown characteristics in the, causing them to suffer or even be deadly.
  • The transgene may reverse causing gene escape.

The first commercial GM food was Calgene's Flavr Savr tomato that resisted rotting, which the company claimed would enable it to stay on the vine longer to ripen. It was first marketed in 1994 without any special labeling. Other common GM crops include canola, cotton, rice and sugar cane....
