Why do angiosperms go through double fertilization ? In other words, what is the purpose of double fertilization ?
Answer -
Angiosperms or flowering plant go through double fertilization by fusing one sperm to the egg cell and the other sperm fuses with polar nuclie. The first one which fuses with egg cell further leads to the formation of zygote while the ssecond one which fuses with polar nuclie leads to the formation of endosperm.
Endosperm is the protective covering of the embryo which provides nutrition, proteins to the developing embryo.
The significance/purpose of the double fertilization is that the chances of survuval of the embryo will increase, the nutrition emryo recieved comes from embryo which is a triploid (3n).
