Some of the bacteria have capability to lyses red blood cell and degrade the hemoglobin by the exoenzymes which they produce. Hemolysis can be done in different way.

Alpha hemolysin,beta hemolysin,and gamma hemolysin.

Alpha hemolysin does not breakdown the red blood cell completely but partially breakdown occurs and this causes a greenish color around the colonies. Greenish color is caused by the byproduct formation of the breakdown of hemoglobin. Biliverdin is a byproduct forms there.

Staphylococcus aureus which is a skin resident flora shows this alpha hemolysin with greenish color.

In Beta hemolysin, complete breakdown of red blood cells and hemoglobin occurs. So no byproduct is formed there. So, this forms a clear zone around the bacterial growth in blood agar plate.

The streptococcus pyrogens breakdown the cell and hemoglobin better in an anaerobic condition.

So, streptococcus pyrogen, which is a skin resident flora shows beta hemolysin and produce clear halo zone.
