Decisions made by environmental policy makers as where to locate a hazardous waste facility have important ethical dimensions. Too often, hazardous waste facilities are in or near predominately poor and/or minority communities. Such communities often have limited involvement in the political process and may not even be aware of their exposure to increased levels of pollutants. These problems represent a type of social injustice.

All organizations, whether for for-profit or not, have an obligation to be socially just in terms of decisions for waste management. The U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) created a handbook to assist organizations in understanding which federal hazardous waste management regulations apply to them as well as how to comply. In addition, many states have their own hazardous waste regulations based on the federal hazardous waste regulations.

Each student will examine a type of pollution associated with a business that impacts predominately poor and/or minority communities. Students will then write a research paper on one specific case study of an environmental injustice within their broader topic.

Case study of remady of plastic waste--Ahmed khan realizes that plastic waste was a real problem. Polyblend, a fine powder of recycled modified plastic, was then developed by his company.
