Osmosis : The movement of solvent from low
solute concentration side to higher solute concentration side
through (or via) a semi-permeable membrane is called as
osmosis.
In the above illustration solution of urea and water is shown
(urea as solute and water as solvent), where left side
of membrane has solution with high concentration of urea and less
concentration of water. Alternatively the right side of membrane
has more water molecules and less urea molecules.
Therefore osmosis happens where water
molecules acting as solvent move across the semi permeable membrane
(from right hand side of membrane as shown in picture) towards the
left hand side of semi permeable membrane where urea molecules are
in higher concentration.
