Legumes are important protein source and rich in mineral named nitrogen compared to cereals.

Why important compared to cereals?

  • High in dietary fibre
  • High in B complex vitamins
  • High in Fe, Mg and Zn
  • Twice protein content than cereals
  • Legumes increase nutrient availability. eg., phosphorous
  • Available in more seasons compared to cereals
  • Less expensive compared to cereals
  • Contain beneficial bioactive components some have antiooxidant properties.
  • DCP content is higher than cereals.
  • Increase soil fertility. because it have symbiotic bacteria in their roots.
