Carbon dioxide is transported by three major mechanisms. The first mechanism of carbon dioxide transport is by blood plasma, as some carbon dioxide molecules dissolve in the blood. The second mechanism is transport in the form of bicarbonate (HCO3), which also dissolves in plasma. The third mechanism of carbon dioxide transport is similar to the transport of oxygen by erythrocytes. The reason why carbon dioxide is transported in form of biocarbonate because it is very water soluble as carbon dioxide being less soluble in water cannot be transported easily.

Thus, carbon dioxide is able to cross the membrane but is less water soluble but biocarbonate ions is not able to cross the membrane due to partial difference among different organs , tissues and blood but is very soluble in water.
