Polydactyly is a condition in which offspring inherits an extra pair of finger or toe. It follows an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern and affects the no of fingers or toe an offspring will have. It is caused due to the presence of a dominant allele.

An individual with homozygous dominant alleles or even heterozygous dominant allele will develop polydactyly and pass this trait into the next generation.

Given:-

  • Female is heterozygous for the trait having one dominant allele= Pp

Here P is the dominant allele which causes polydactyly and p is the recessive allele for polydactyly. Therefore heterozygous dominant female will form two different types of gametes one carrying P and another carrying p

  • Male is homozygous recessive for the trait having 2 copies of recessive alleles =pp.​​​​​​​  ​​​​​​​

In this case, the male is homozygous recessive for the given trait thus he will produce 2 similar types of gamete each one carrying only the recessive allele p

Genotypic ratio= 2:2 -out of the 4 offsprings 2 of them were Pp (Affected) and 2 offsprings were pp (normal).

Phenotypic ratio= 2:2- out of the 4 offspring 2 of them were Pp and other 2 offsprings were pp

so the probability of having a child born with polydactyly is 50% as out of the 4 offsprings 2 were having Pp genotype showing the disease in the heterozygous state having only one dominant disease-causing allele
