You are the shipboard biologist for an expedition bringing up samples from new sites discovered on the ocean floor. Which of the following novel organisms would you characterize as a likely protist? Select all that apply. Organism A. Within each single cell is a nucleus, plus several membrane-bound structures, some of which are green. Organism B. This organism is an extremophile found in deep sea hydrothermal vents. DNA is localized to a nucleoid region of the cell. Organism C. This single-celled organism has large mitochondria, long flagella, and is extremely mobile. Organism D. This single-celled organism has linear chromosomes anchored to the nuclear envelopes of multiple nuclei per cell, and uses its cilia to crawl on the surface of sand grains. Organism E. This organism can be found either as single cells or as colonies of similar cells. Each cell contains a nucleus and mitochondria. Organism F. This single-celled organism has a cell wall, multiple flagella, and one circular chromosome almost filling each cell.

Answer #1

ans the organisms A,C,D,E can be classified as protists.

Organism A protists have a nucleus containing the DNA and some protists have chloroplasts and they appear green .they have membrane bound structures like mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum etc.

Organism B protists are extremophiles.

nucleoid is a irregularly shaped region in cell which contains genetic material but protists have their genetic material in nucleus .so this organism cannot be classified as a protist

Organism C protists have mitochondria , They have flagella and are motile.they also have generate movement with cilia, flagella, or pseudopodia.

Organism D . Most protists are single-celled. They have linear chromosomes. Most of them are are motile and have cilia, Many protists are multinucleated; in some, the nuclei are different sizes and have distinct roles in protist cell function.

Organism E They live as single or as colonies having a group of free-living cells and in other ways as a multicellular organism. it contains cell organelles like mitochondria . it has a nucleus.

F Most protists are single-celled. They have a cell wall. some of them have single flagellum while others have multiple flagella. They have linear chromosomes unlike Prokaryotes which have single circular chromosomes where they store their genetic information. .so this organism cannot be classified as a protist
