26. Bacteria are infected by bacteriophages while animal cells are eukaryotic cells that are infected by eukaryotic viruses. Bacteriophage genome gets incorporated in bacterial chromosomes to form prophage. When the viral genome integrates into eukaryotic host cells, it is called proviruses. Thus, prophage is present in bacteria and provirus is present in animal cells.

Bacteriophages can have DNA or RNA as their genetic material, although RNA viruses infecting bacteria are rare. Leviviridae bacteriophages are RNA bacteriophages. Animal cells can be infected by ssDNA, dsDNA and single stranded positive or negative strand RNA genome containing viruses. Retroviruses are viruses that have RNA genome that code for reverse transcriptase enzyme (RT). RT enzyme is an RNA dependent DNA polymerase that uses RNA as template to make a complementary DNA strand. Retroviruses generally infect eukaryotic cells. Retroviruses rarely infect bacteria as bacteria do not perform much RNA editing.

Virus is a general term for an infectious agent that replicates inside a living cell. Hence, even bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria. HIV and SIV are examples of a virus infecting humans and animals. Prophage is the phage that inserts in the bacterial host chromosome when it enters the lysogenic cycle. Phage is the term for bacteriophage that infects bacterial cells.
