Soil water potential is defined as potential energy per unit quantity of water, relative to reference soil water potential.

  • Soil 1 is in adsoption / wetting curve and soil 2 is in drying curve.
  • For a given matric potential, water content in the soil 2 is higher than that soil in the soil 1.
  • Soil 1 has large pore radius while soil 2 have smaller pore radius.
  • Presence of entrapped air in soil 1.
  • therefore grain size is more in soil 1 and regarding grain size distribution, it wildly vary in soil 1.. i.e, soil 1 is sandy type while soil 2 is clayey type.
