Positive sense virus

  • virus with single stranded RNA
  • ssRNA genomes present
  • uses ssRNA as genetic material
  • ssRNA can act as messenger RNA and can cause translation of proteins in the host
  • Eg: picornavirus, flavi virus

Negative sense virus

  • ssRNA can't be used as messenger RNA
  • single stranded RNA virus
  • ssRNA used as genetic material
  • It is complementary to mRNA and can be converted to positive sense by RNA polymerase before translation.
  • highly complex
  • it can suppress innate immunity of cells of host
  • eg: boronavirus, filivirus
