Answer #1

The membrane and cell wall structures of Gram-negative bacteria (2 pts).

Answer: In gram negative bacteria there is a thin layer of peptidoglycan (10nm) in the cell wall. Lipopolysaccharide is present as a thick layer in the cell wall.

Phyla: Firmicutes and proteobacteria are two major phulums

The membrane and cell wall structures of Gram-positive bacteria (2 pts).

Answer: In gram-positive bacteria, there is a thick peptidoglycan layer (approx 80nm) in the cell wall. Teichoic acid is present in the cell wall of gram-positive bacteria.

Phyla: Actinobacteria (high G+C content), Firmicutes (low G+C content)

Part A Which of the following statements accurately describes bacterial cell walls? In bacteria with acid-tast cell walls, the carboxylic acid in the walls forms a layer outside a thin layer of hydrophilic polypeptides. The cell walls of gram-negative bacteria contain many more layers of peptidoglycan than those of gram-positive bacteria. In gram-negative bacteria, the thin layer of peptidoglycan is surrounded by an outer membrane made of phospholipids, lipopolysaccharides, and proteins Gram-negative bacterial cell walls contain teichoic acids, whereas the...
