Reverse electron transfer is a mitochondrial signaling pathway and also plays a mechanism in microbial metabolism. The redox state of the CoQ pool determines electron leak and superoxide production and can be used by mitochondria as a signaling mechanism. The energy is supplied by consuming proton motive force to drive electrons in a reverse direction through an electron transport chain

It is needed in purple bacteria which lack external electron carriers to spontaneously reduce NADP+ to NADPH, so they have to use their reduced quinones to reduce NADP+. This process is driven by the proton motive force and is called reverse electron flow.
