Answer #1

facultative anaerobe can grow in the presence or absence of oxygen in the presence of oxygen the bacteria carry out aerobic respiration and produce 36 ATP from a single glucose molecule, but in the absence of oxygen, the facultative anaerobe carries out fermentation and produces 2 ATPs from a glucose molecule.

the large amount of ATP is produced in the presence of oxygen, so the bacteria can grow more rapidly in the presence of oxygen, compared to the culture that grows in the absence of oxygen so the culture growing in the presence of oxygen will have more bacteria at the end of the week because in the presence of oxygen the glucose is used more efficiently.

The protein-synthesizing machinery was isolated from eukaryotic cells and briefly treated with a low concentration of RNase. The sample was then subjected to sucrose gradient centrifugation. The gradient was fractionated and the absorbance, or optical density (OD), at 254 nm was recorded for each fraction. The following plot (graph A) was obtained. a) what do the three peaks of absorbance in graph A represent?
