Glucose

Cellular respiration is the process of breakdown of glucose into carbon dioxide and water to generate ATP. ATP is a high energy carrier which is used by the cell to perform metabolic activities.

Glucose is first broken down into pyruvic acid in the process of glycolysis and then pyruvic acid is oxidised into acetyl coenzyme a which then enter tricarboxylic acid cycle. During all the three processes glucose passes on its electrons to high energy electron carriers, NADH and FADH2 ​​​​​​. These electron Carriers then enter electron transport chain and lead to the formation of proton gradient by passing there electrons to the electron Carriers located in inner mitochondrial membrane. Finally the electrons are accepted by oxygen and water is formed.

The electrochemical energy stored in proton gradient is used by ATP synthase enzyme to synthesise ATP by phosphorylating ADP.
