Oxidation of glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate in glycolysis results in formation of 1, 3 bisphosphoglycerate and involves glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate dehydrogenase. There is formation of 1 NADH2 from NAD+. In this reaction, the carbonyl group (C=O) of aldehyde is oxidized to carboxylic acid. G-3-P has an aldehyde group with carbonyl functional group. Hydroxyl group is not present in aldehyde. This reaction is highly exergonic with release of energy, which is stored in 1, 3 bisphosphoglycerate.

In conversion of pyruvate to lactate, there is oxidation of NADH+ to NAD+. Pyruvate is reduced to lactate. This reaction is exergonic with delta G01= -6 Kcal/mol. The reduction of pyruvate to lactate requires E01= -190 mV. This energy is much less than what is required when G-3-P is oxidized to 1, 3 Bisphosphoglycerate.
