What are examples of new hire orientation (also referred to as On boarding) experiences you have had as a new hire that have been particularly effective (or ineffective) in helping to make the first day, the first week, the first month effective? All of you have either been hired and had a Day One experience or maybe you are in college and you can relate to freshman orientation. Things to think (remember) about: where you welcomed, were you told in advance what to wear and bring to NHO, did you have a desk ready, a phone, a password-login, instructions on how to dial out and use the phone, bathroom, what now...get the idea? Tell us the good, the bad, and the ugly of your Day 1!

Orientation also known as induction refers to the process of welcoming the new hired employees in the organization and making them aware about the culture and working of the organization. It is a welcoming process and a way to inform the new recruits about the system of the organization.

Orientation needs to be done very carefully, so that the employees do not feel neglected on the first day/week of the job and a welcoming behaviour is highlighted. I, as a new recruited employee with an education sector(a college) was well oriented on the first day of the job, and proper follow up was done for one full week. Following events took place on the first day of joining:

  • I entered into the college and informed the receptionist about my first day by showing the offer letter issued to me by the college authorities.
  • Further I was called into the principal office to have a short meeting, where I was welcomed by the principle.
  • After which I was taken to the staffroom, along with the principle, where all other staff members and teachers were already assembled.
  • Before starting the day, I gave my introduction to everyone and was welcomed by the teachers.
  • Next, my departmental teachers took me to the concerned department, where the HOD(head of the department) informed ne my sitting plan, and handing over my attendance registers, time table to be followed and classes to be taught.
  • Later, I was directed to the IT department where I had to get my biometrics fixed by giving my details for other purposes.
  • Though the system took 3 days to start as normal, I was assured for the same and was guided to be calm till then.
  • Then later I was introduced to different classes with students, so that the next day of teaching becomes an easy task for me.

It can be concluded that my day of orientation was quite organised and I as a new recruited employee was well directed and informed to do the concerned tasks and was well introduced to the teachers and the students. Though the IT department took bit time to get my biometrics and other details ready, but this can still be avoided, if other things went well.
