Answer #1

This reaction is benzoin condensation.

The benzaldehyde molecule underg condensation with other molecule to give the shown product

The reaction can not occur in absence of NaCN, as the carbonly carbon of benzaldehyde is not enough nucleophilic to undergo nucleophile addition reaction due to presence of benzene.

Benzaldehyde molecule will react with NaCN and will react the benzaldehyde and will convert the less nucleophilic carbonyl carbon (or sometimes called to be electrophilic carbonyl carbon) to high enough nucleophilic carbonyl carbon.

the mechanism will be

now nucleophilic carbon ?? H20 H CN CN CN ?? ?? ?? CN CN ?? ?? CN
