It is stimulated by light to emit an electrical signal to the brain which is first visual transduction pathway. Maintains protein configuration under stress. Upon stress \alpha \beta Crystallin dissociates from the filaments to interact with unfolding \beta/\gamma crystallin to protect against aggregation and loss of transparency
