b. recA mutant:

recA mutant cells have virtually no inheritance of markers in Hfr crosses. This represents a reduction of recombination of 100,000 fold. The RecA protein promotes synapsis and strand exchange between homologous DNA molecules. At least one of the DNA partners must be single-stranded.

RuvA and RuvB mutant:

RuvAB stimulate branch migration of DNA with the hydrolysis of ATP. Unlike the branch migration stimulated by the RecA protein, RuvAB-stimulated branch migration is equally efficient in either direction.

RuvA mutants that resolve HJs, have lost the capacity to reverse forks. In vivo and in vitro evidence indicate that the ruvA mutations affect DNA binding and the stimulation of RuvB helicase activity. RuvB mutants have been reported to affect branch migration.

RecB:

RecB reduce recombination in Hfr crosses (about 100-fold), but not as severely as recA. (The mutations are however epistatic with recA).

The recBCD protein is a complex enzyme catalyzing DNA unwinding (DNA helicase activity) and DNA degradation (exonuclease activity).
