Personal Ideas and Beliefs About Therapy

You undoubtedly had certain beliefs and ideas about therapy before reading this chapter in the text. Has studying this chapter changed any of those beliefs and ideas?

Before studying this course, I looked at therapy from an entirely different lens and had some stereotypes which got dealt with effectively during this course. Earlier I used to think that therapy is necessary and needed only when the concerned individual is suffering from a serious mental issue. I learned, however, that this is not true and anyone and everyone can need therapy during different phases in their life. This is because, at times, we just need an external source of motivation and perspective so that we can have a broader vision with life.

Also, I was not sure whether therapy would have real effects on the individual and I used to think that talking to a friend is close enough. This is, however, farther away from the truth. Therapy is necessary and it is extremely different from talking to a friend. It is always better to get professional help from someone who has had experience in the field.
