Here are the big five personality dimension & how they relate with leadership:

  • Here are the five personality traits - extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness & neuroticism.

Openness -

  • Openness - Thus trait is about imagination & insights. People who are high on this trait have broader interest areas. They have a high level of curiosity & are eager to learn new things & gain new experiences.
  • With openness, leaders become more adventurous & innovative in their approach. If people are low in this trait then they are more conservation & face challenges with abstract thinking.
  • From the leadership point of view people high on openness have high creative ability, open to trying new things & are happy to think outside the box.

Conscientiousness -

  • This trait involves a high level of thoughtfulness, impulse control & have behaviour which is goal-oriented.
  • In terms of leadership, this trait helps to be organised & detail-oriented. Such leaders plan ahead, think about the impact of their behavior of others & are very concerned about deadlines.
  • The person low on conscientiousness has less interest in structures, doesn't take care of things, important tasks are delayed & failure to complete the tasks with accuracy.

Extraversion -

  • This is characterised by having a high level of excitement, social skills, talking behavior, assertiveness & also high level of emotional expressions.
  • In terms of leadership, such people are highly outgoing & gain energy via social situations. It helps them to understand team dynamics faster.
  • People low in extraversion are reserved & spend less energy on networking. They don't like making small talk & it affects their leadership style as they are not able to understand others easily.
  • They also carefully think before expressing their opinions & don't like attention.

Agreeableness -

  • This personality trait involves attributed like trust, altruism, kindness, affection and behaviors that are social in nature.
  • For the leadership aspect, this trait helps people to be more cooperative, have an interest in other people, be caring, being empathetic & enjoy contributing to each other satisfaction & happiness.
  • Such leaders are able to assist & support others to achieve their goals.

Neuroticism -

  • This is characterised by sadness, having moody attitude & instability in expressing emotions.
  • They face high levels of instability & get irritated easily.
  • The ones that are low on this are able to be effective leaders and are more emotionally stable, have stress management skills, feel less sad, have fewer worries and are generally more relaxed in their dealings.
