Question

Ma Identifying the major species in weak acid or weak base eq The prepar equilibrium. You can leave out water itself rations of two aqueous solutions are described in the table below. For each solution, write the chemical formulas of the major species present at Write the chemical formulas of the species that will act as acids in the acids row, the formulas of the species that will act as bases in the bases row, and the formulas of the species that will act as neither acids nor bases in the other row You will find it useful to keep in mind that HCN is a weak acid. acids: 1.1 mol of KOH is added to 1.0 L of a 1.1 MHCNbases: solution other: 0.42 mol of HI is added toacids: 1.0 L of a solution that is bases: 1.2 M in both HCN and NaCN.

Answer #1

1)

KOH is a strong base and it will react with weak base like HCN to form salt KCN and water -

KOH + HCN -> KCN + H2O

So, base is KOH

acid is HCN

other species not reacting as either acid or base is H2O

2)

Solution already contains HCN and NaCN

NaCN is a salt of weak acid HCN with strong base like NaOH so, its basic in nature.

Adding HI which is a strong acid we will have the following reaction -

HI + NaCN -> NaI + HCN

Where HI will act like an acid and NaCN as a base and other non reacting species are HCN and H2O
