In thermodynamics, properties are classified in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic.

In the above question also, Marr is trying to explain that temperature, pressure and density are intrinsic in nature as they are independent of other objects (the property corresponds to itself).

He uses this example because intrinsic properties are only dependent on chemical composition, inherent property.
