Answer #1

Cytosol is the defalt location of proteins synthesized on cytosolic ribsomes in the abasence of targeting information

the general features of an N-terminal signal sequence that targets secretory proteins to the ER are the N-teminal signials sequence that targets secretory proteins to ER would be roughly 16 -30amino acids with with roughly 6-12 amino acids that are hydrophobic

the general features of mitochondrial matrix-targeting sequences-

1.located N-terminus

2.20-50 aminoacids in lenth

3.Rich in hydrophobic aminoacids, positively charged amino acid( Arg, lys), and hydroxylated ones (ser, thr)

4.lack negitvely charged acidic residue (Asp, Glu)

5.Alpha-helical conformation(one-hydrophobic,opposite side -charge amino acid: amphipathic)

6.Amphipathicity of matrix -targeting sequences is critical their function.

The import of proteins into mitochondria requires energy in the form of ATP for their [____] and of mitochondria that are energized, with an electrochemical gradient. The imported proteins must be synthesized on [____] ribosomes as they are bound to requisite [____]. Protein import itself requires that the protein have an N-terminal targeting sequence that folds into an [____] for interaction with the import receptor on the outer mitochondrial membrane. The translocase of the outer membrane (TOM) complex consists of...

Scientists want to design fluorescent marker proteins for different cellular compartments using the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). This means that the GFP will be targeted and glow at the organelle of interest and they can use these to mark different organelles during fluorescence microscopy. To make these marker proteins, they take the sequence of GFP and add the desired sorting signal. A. GFP on its own is an excellent protein to use as an organelle marker protein because it is...

For her research project, Anneka found this great website to predict the transmembrane domains of secretory proteins. An algorithm allows estimating the hydrophobicity of amino acid stretches in the sequence of secretory proteins. Hydrophobic stretches are plotted with positive values on the Y-axis. On the X-axis, Anneka can see the protein sequence expressed as amino acid number, with N-terminus at the intersection with the Y-axis. Example of prediction of TMD domains (a) Human growth hormone receptor (type 1) Nw Signal...

please answer all that you can 1. You have genetically engineered green fluorescent protein (GFP) containing a KDEL sequence (GFP-KDEL). When GFP-KDEL is expressed in normal human fibroblasts and examined using fluorescence microscopy, the fluorescence appears diffuse across the cytoplasm. How would you explain this observations given that KDEL is supposed to be an ER-specific sorting sequence? A. This engineered GFP would not have a hydrophobic signal sequence to get it into the RER in the first place. B. The...
