1. Sugars belong to carbohydrates. Thegeneral formula is (C.H2O)n . The term sugar is applied to carbohydrates as most of them are soluble in water and are sweet to taste.

2. The most common type of sugar in our diet are hexoses and heptoses like glucose, galactose, sucrose, lactose, maltose, fructose, etc.

3. Carbohydrates are abundant source of energy for all organisms. The produce 4 Cal per gram energy. And they also serve as the storage form of energy to meet immediate energy requirements of the body. The major pathway of carbohydrate metabolism is glycolysis and followed by TCA Cycle and from which 32 ATPs are produced by just one molecule of glucose.

4. When sugars are consumed in excessively more than our bodies energy requirements it is stored as fat deposits in the body and which can cause obesity and other related diseases to it like cardiac disease and also excess sugar intake can cause dental problems also

5. Processed foods contain a large amount of simple sugars and sodium which are all converted to lipid depositions in the body
