During winter time a heat pump is operating on a heating mode to maintain a

living room at 23oC during which the outside temperature is -5oC. The system is

using R134a as a working fluid. The refrigerant leaves the condenser at 28oC and

enters a compressor at -10oC. The refrigerant flow rate is 0.12kg/s. Assume an

ideal VCC to evaluate the system and report the followings:

a. Process diagram

b. Heating capacity kJ/hr

c. Coefficient of performance of the system

d. Power required kW

e. Maximum COP based on a reversed carnot cycle

If the same system is used to maintain a spacious freezer at -5oC with an

outside temperature at 22oC.

f. What is the cooling capacity BTU/hr and tons of refrigeration.

g. Find coefficient of performance

h. What is the SEER rating

i. What is the monthly cost of running this freezer if the electrical tariff

is 50cent/Unit.

j. Provide Ts diagram for this cycle

k. Process diagram

Problem #1 (40 Marks) A refrigeration system is designed to maintain a cool space at -20°C in arn environment of +50°C. The wide temperature range is difficult to achieve with a single refrigerant, because the refrigerant will generally be at excessively high pressures at the top of the temperature range, and sub-atmospheric pressures at the bottom end The problem is solved with a 2-stage cascaded system that uses refrigerant 134a (R134a) and refrigerant 22 (R22) respectively for the high temperature...
